Roots and Permaculture (The Permaculture Poem) #permaculture #sustainability

I have two long term projects. The first project – a Conscious Hip-Hop Cabaret (with an optional dub healing room depending on the space), an event which both promotes and raises funds for sustainablity projects, charities, and permaculture projects. The second project, partially financed by the first – a sustainable community that lives by these principles (and a base where events and workshops can take place.) The second project, partially financed by the first – a sustainable community that lives by these principles and a base where events and workshops can take place. Surrounded by healing plants from hemp to lavender, hemp being such a versatile plant for energy, food and building materials it could help make the rest of the project sustainable but permaculture principles will avoid a mono-culture of just hemp.

As a step towards this I felt like I should write a poem / rap about permaculture principles, cos if I’m going to be both director and performer at these events, I should have some rhymes to perform on the subject. Last night and this morning I wrote that poem / rap. And here it is…

I hope you enjoy the poem below, and I hope you are inspired by the ideas above.

Roots and Permaculture
(The Permaculture Poem)
(INTRO)
ROOTS and Permaculture – the ‘Edge Effect’ –
the use of natural patterns… for less regrets
increasing diversity n productivity in our systems
like increasing flows and verbal algorithms in our rhythms.
(CHORUS)
I was all about Taoism n Tibetan Buddhism,
Now I’m learning ‘bout roots and permaculture livin
… Taoism, Tibetan Buddhism,
and learning about roots and permaculture livin
Communicate these ideas to generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
Communicate these ideas to generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
_
(VERSE 1, Principles 1 – 4)
Roots and culture, roots and permaculture
Observe and interact, collaborate and work with, react
Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder, Look around and be Earth’s soldier
Planting when it’s getting warmer, harvest before it’s colder
_
Catch and store energy, making use of the sunlight blessing me
“Make hay while the sun shines” big trees store sunshine
and south-facing walls can store sunshine, that’s some find,
like my phone and notebooks store fun rhymes.
_
Obtain a yield, make the most of your field
You can’t work on an empty stomach, or the strain gets revealed
Give your stomach that good vibration
Of raw food that’s been through a healthy fermentation
_
Self regulation and constructive criticism
supports the next 7 generations, that’s a given.
Use discernment and temperamence, not gimmicks,
It’s good to dream big but also know your limits.
____ (16 Bars verse 1)
(CHORUS)
I was all about Taoism n Tibetan Buddhism,
Now I’m learning ‘bout roots and permaculture livin
… Taoism, Tibetan Buddhism,
and learning about roots and permaculture livin
Communicate these ideas to generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
Communicate these ideas to generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
(VERSE 2, Principles 5 -8)
Use and value renewable resource,
sunlight or strength of horse, but let nature take it’s course
Cos if it’s not sustainable it’s unsustainable,
So sustainable solutions are inevitable, we’ll change it all.
Waste not want not, fill your face or lunch box,
someone else’s face or lunch box, recycling or compost.
Everything’s useful if you rest with it long enough,
Solutions often come in nature walks when you wander off.
_
see the stumbles as steps to success, never see fails,
start from a birds eye view of the patterns before the details.
Take a step back to see the patterns like fractals in the leaves
So you CAN see the forest for the trees.
_
Rather than compete, collaborate!
Integrate! Rather than segregate!
United we stand, divided we fall sun, “Many hands make light work”, besides, we’re all one.
(CHORUS)
I was all about Taoism n Tibetan Buddhism,
Now I’m learning ‘bout roots and permaculture livin
… Taoism, Tibetan Buddhism,
and learning about roots and permaculture livin
Communicate these ideas with generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
Communicate these ideas with generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
(VERSE 3, Principles 9 – 12)
Principle 9 is very Taoist and divine,
Solutions small and slow will make big differences you’ll find,
“Slow and steady wins the race,” said the Taoist.
“The bigger they are…” replied the minimalist.
_
diversify, use diversity
your ally is variety
Variety is the spice of life,
Less of each with more diversity is twice as nice.
_
At the edges of habitats – intriguing interfaces
Like non-monoculture hedges attract more insects to these places
It’s time for those indoors to start boiling their kettles
Cos at the edge of the forest your boys been foraging for nettles
_
So we react to changes, and we look ahead,
As our plan rearranges cos we’re nature led.
And it’s more than reasonable to eat local and seasonal.
We’ll keep it all sustainable and eat it all – well fed.
(CHORUS)
I was all about Taoism n Tibetan Buddhism,
Now I’m learning ‘bout roots and permaculture livin
… Taoism, Tibetan Buddhism,
and learning about roots and permaculture livin
Communicate these ideas to generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires
Communicate these ideas to generous millionaires
Communicate these ideas with altruistic billionaires.
(Outro)
ROOTS and Permaculture – the ‘Edge Effect’ –
the use of natural patterns… for less regrets
increasing diversity n productivity in our systems
like increasing flows and verbal algorithms in our rhythms.
